Rank/Categorize

The third and final stage of a workshop is one where people work together towards a goal. This can happen through prototyping as proof of concepts for solution, or other exercises that support decision-making.

1. Divide participants in groups

2. Distribute the exercise template for each group

3. After filling out the template, each group needs to select one of the group members to be the speaker for the group

4. The speaker gets a time limit in which to present group’s idea

5. After the pitch, the floor is open for discussion

Steps

Consulting

The speaker should be aware of the time limit. Give them a sign at a time agreed beforehand (e.g. when there are 30 seconds left). Do not cut the speaker but let them finish their sentence when the time is up.

Linking exercises

This exercise is for presenting outcomes of earlier exercises so there should always be something prior to this.

Excellent combination with Prototyping

1. (1 min) Place previous material (to be ranked) so that everyone can see it.

2. (1 min) Provide each group or individual a suitable ‘ranking items’ (e.g. Post-its used as points, pens, etc.)

3. (3 min) From the previous material, the participants should rank/categorize the ideas according to the aim of the workshop.

Steps

Consulting

This exercise is a simple and effective way to reduce clutter and organize ideas generated in other exercises, for categorizing or finding the focus/highest priority ideas to be developed further.

Never influence people's opinion

Linking exercises

This exercise uses the outcomes of earlier exercises. e.g. Brain pool

To use the findings it should be further connected to another exercise according to the aim of the workshop.

1. (1 min) Distribute a template to each participant (or group)

2. (2 min) Each participant (or group) comes up with a list of stakeholders involved in the workshop topic (e.g. if the theme is traveling, stakeholders would be tourists, check-in staff, luggage carriers, etc.)

3. (1 min) From the list, the participants/groups choose the stakeholder they think is the most interesting or important according to the workshop aim.

4. (6 min) Templates are filled out with more specific information about the chosen stakeholder – it could also include a drawing.

5. To create the ‘fun’ factor, the templates can be shuffled around

Steps

Consulting

Create a suitable atmosphere for people to get in roles.

This exercise is useful to create stakeholders that are closely linked to the aim of the workshop. This allows the participants tackle future exercises, such as solving/finding problems or generating concepts from another perspective. This is extremely useful when working towards anything that should be successful.

Linking exercises

The filled templates should be used for other exercises such as Prototyping

Try using Persona card

1. (1 min) Provide enough materials for all the participants, whether it is individually, in pairs or in groups

2. (15 min) Participants prototype the conceptual solution from a previous exercise (it should be MVP)

3. (1 - 2 min/prototype) After the time is up, each participant/ group should present their prototype

Steps

Consulting

This exercise allows the participants to build a physical prototype of their conceptual solution from earlier exercises.

Bring appropriate material and the right quantity depending on the number of participants. Get creative with material - almost anything can be used!

Can be done individually/in groups

Provide help if needed

The same exercise can be used for PROVOtyping (check more from our Dictionary)

Linking exercises

This exercise should follow a solution-finding exercise

Best Feature, Worst Scenario

1. (1 min) After hearing about the concepts/seen the prototypes in question, templates are distributed to the participants.

2. (8 - 13 min) Each participant fills the template as a form of feedback to the prototype/concept.

3. (1 min) The ‘owner’ of the prototype/concept gathers the feedback from the other participants in order to improve the concept.

Steps

This exercise is suitable if the participants need to refine or evaluate a solution or a prototype.

Consider using interviews or different personas in this exercise. In case of personas, consider whether the participants should create them or if they should be created prior to the workshop. Create a suitable atmosphere for people to get in roles.
